Maricia Johns

Maricia D.C. Johns has education in her DNA. In fact, she can trace working in education back at least 3 generations. Maricia started her career in education as a graduate instructor at Texas A&M University Commerce. After obtaining her master’s degree in business education she was employed with the Fort Worth Independent School District as Business educator, Career and Technology Coordinator and Small Learning Communities Coordinator.

While working with Fort Worth Independent School District she was selected to work with National AdvancED, which provides schools and districts with improvement through a unified, clear approach. She continues her career in education as a business instructor at Tarrant County College.

As a Saturday school coordinator Maricia noticed that the parents of students were not as informed as they should be about the state mandated test. She submitted an article to the Fort Worth Black News informing parents of crucial testing information. This lead to an opportunity for a regular position with the Fort Worth Black News as their education columnist which in turn lead her to write for her hometown newspaper—the Longview News Journal. Maricia’s writings have also been published in the Christian Index and the USA Today.

In April 2012 she launched her blog “thisisyourbestyear” which is for and about women of a certain age. “thisisyourbestyear” covers a variety of subjects including finance, culinary, travel, careers and more. The blog has been voted Best of Fort Worth by both the readers of the Star Telegram and the Fort Worth, Texas Magazine. In 2019 Maricia and her blog were featured in the Fall/Winter USA Today’s Best Years Magazine.

Active in the community Maricia was on the founding board of the Jubilee Theatre. She is a proud member of the Fort Worth graduate chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated (Psi Zeta), and a member of the Tarrant County Women’s Policy Forum. As a member of Carter Metropolitan Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, she is the co-founder of the Revered Jerome B. Price, Senior Scholarship, a greeter and Sunday School teacher. She is a past elected official of the city of Forest Hill.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Science degree from the best university in Texas—Texas A&M University-Commerce. In her quest to always try something new, Maricia trained and completed her one and only full marathon. Her motto on that is “I did it, no need to do it again”.

She is a wife to attorney Leslie C. Johns, mother of two wonderful daughters, Tasha and Julia and Honey (grandmother) to one amazingly, smart, handsome grandson—Joseph.
